“They’re changing everything.” Alonso on two weeks of working with Garnaço and Delap. Two weeks of intensive training have passed, and Habil Alonso doesn’t hide his feelings: the tactical puzzle is starting to take shape. The Argentine winger and English forward, who arrived at the training ground with different playing backgrounds, have quickly adapted to the philosophy of the Basque coach. “I see that they’re approaching the game in a different way,” said Alonso during the press conference. “Garnaço adds verticality to the game, while Delap becomes a key point for coordinating attacks. These aren’t just new names in the team’s lineup; they’re new options within our system.” Alonso’s approach is based on controlling spaces, aggressive pressing, and quick transitions. Garnaço, known for his explosive play, has shifted his focus from individual attacks to timely entries into the opponent’s defensive zone. Delap, whose strength lies in fighting and finishing plays, now participates more actively in the first press, taking control of the center and freeing up spaces for flanking partners. The coaching staff has focused on microcycles: video analysis, tactical discussions, and 5×5 drills. The results are already visible in the control phases of the game. The team is now able to make decisions more quickly in the final third, and the number of ball losses has decreased by almost a fifth. “Two weeks is just the beginning,” emphasized Alonso. “But if they continue to show such a desire to learn, we’ll have a team capable of breaking any defense.” Now comes the official preparations for the season. Garnaço and Delap are already integrated into the starting lineups, and their interaction on the flanks and in the middle is becoming a key element of the attacking strategy. Alonso isn’t in a hurry, but he makes it clear that tactical flexibility and individual initiative are now intertwined. And this, he says, is exactly what’s needed to compete on all fronts.
