Basketball in Zapolyarye: 10-point shots, a trophy in the mine, and victory for “Nikelya”.
Basketball in the Far North: 10-point shots, a trophy in the mine, and victory for “Nikel” Norrillsk became the stage for a unique basketball celebration, marking the 20th anniversary of CSKA’s historic victory in the EuroLeague. Stars of modern basketball came to this harsh Far North region: Mello Trimble, Antonius Cleveland, Alexander Gankievich, Samson Ruzhenets, and the legendary center Pavel Podkolzine. Their presence went far beyond a standard exhibition game. The event’s program seamlessly integrated sports into the industrial context of the region. The athletes visited key locations of Norilsk Nickel. The main prize of the All-Ukrainian League was symbolically dropped into the shaft of the Angidrit mine. This gesture emphasized the connection between great victories and hard work, as well as the Far North’s characteristics. For local young athletes, the stars conducted intensive training sessions. After that, they faced off against employees of the company that operates the mine. The organizers abandoned traditional rules in favor of more exciting experiments. Long-range shots worth 4 or 10 points were introduced, and each quarter ended with a series of technical fouls. This format added excitement and unpredictability to the game, turning it into a real show. In the end, “Nikel” became more accurate and disciplined than “Palladium”, winning with a score of 79:74. This Far North game proved that basketball can bring together different regions and generations. Bold changes to the rules only further stimulate interest in the game. Norillsk not only had a sports event, but also a truly special celebration that will be remembered by both participants and thousands of spectators for a long time.
