Legends at the peak of their careers: all coaches who have reached the pinnacle of the World Cup championship

Winning the World Cup isn’t just a tactical victory; it’s a permanent place in the history of football. Over the course of almost a century, only a few coaches have managed to bring the world’s most important trophy to their side. Each of them has changed the rules of the game, adapting their strategies to the times, the players, and the immense pressure of a global tournament.

The pioneer of success was Alberto Supichi from Uruguay in 1930. But it was the Italian Vittorio Pozzo who truly created a dynasty. He brought Juventus to gold medals in 1934 and 1938. After the war, the mantle was taken over by Sepp Herberger, who created the “Bernese Miracle” in 1954.

The Brazilian school has produced several geniuses: Vitorino Feola in 1958, Aimoré Moraes in 1962, Mario Zagallo in 1970, Carlos Alberto Parreira in 1994, and Luiz Felipe Scolari in 2002. Zagallo became history’s first person to win the World Cup both as a player and as a coach.

European coaches also left their mark on the history of football. Alf Ramsey with his “wing defenders” in 1966, Enzo Beauchart with his flexible total football in 1982, Carlos Bilardo with his “libero” system in 1986, Franz Beckenbauer, who proved that genius on the field is just as effective when playing at the top level. Marcelo Oliveira in 2006, Vitorino dos Bois in 2010, Joachim Low in 2014, Didier Deschamps in 2018, and Lionel Scolari in 2022—each of them left their unique mark on history.

This list is a chronicle of the evolution of football: from the classic World Cup to today’s positional dominance and intense pressure. And while the game continues to change, these coaches remain the standards of coaching excellence.
