The end of an era: from the legendary “Ajax” team, only De Jong remains in the Dutch national team.
The golden generation of Amsterdamers, who revolutionized European football in the 2018/19 season, is finally leaving history. While Ronald Koeman used to rely on a strong core of Ajax players to create his tactics, now only Frank de Jong remains in the Dutch national team’s squad. The absence of his former teammates is due to injuries, a lack of consistent playing experience, and the natural transition of generations in the top leagues. For the national team, this represents a significant tactical challenge. The coaching staff must find new combinations in the midfield, relying on young talents and experienced veterans from other leagues. De Jong now has to take on the responsibility of maintaining Ajax’s unique style of play and keeping control of the ball in the midfield.
