Gordiyuk as the leader of “Admiral”: salvation or another step toward crisis?

The change of leadership in Vladivostok was only a matter of time. The previous regular KHL season was a real test for the club. Unfortunately, the team couldn’t withstand it. Today, the people from Vladivostok officially announced that Alexey An will step down as the general director, and Viktor Gordiyuk will take his place. For those who are aware of the internal processes within the organization, this decision wasn’t surprising. However, there’s no reason to be euphoric about these changes. Just changing the top management won’t solve the systemic problems that have been accumulating over the past few seasons.

“Admiral” has always faced logistical and financial challenges. But this year, these problems have been compounded by issues related to team depth, playing style, and stability of results. Gordiyuk is a experienced manager, but he will have to work under strict salary limits, limited resources, and high competition in the East. Without significant changes in the coaching staff, scouting policies, and youth development, the club risks not only staying in the bottom of the table, but also becoming the main underdog in the conference.

It’s too early to judge the strategy of the new general director. But history of KHL shows that quick changes rarely lead to immediate results. If there’s no substantial improvement during the offseason, “Admiral” will face a tough battle for survival. Unfortunately, the chances of improving the situation seem slim. The people from Vladivostok need to change not just the name of the club, but also the entire structure behind decision-making.
