The obstacle course race will replace equestrian sports in the 2028 Olympics.
The Olympic program is undergoing historic changes: the iconic format of extreme races will officially replace equestrian sports in modern pentathlon. This decision, agreed upon by the International Union of Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) and the Japanese company TBS, marks a new era for the Games in Los Angeles.
The legendary show “Sasuke”, which has been broadcast since 1997 and has been adapted in 25 countries around the world, has proven its global appeal. Its audience spans over 160 countries, making this sport an ideal choice for enhancing the Olympic format. The IOC has approved the updated structure of pentathlon: fencing, swimming, running, shooting, and obstacle course racing.
A key aspect of this agreement is the licensing of certain obstacle designs, which are owned by TBS. This ensures that the authenticity of the courses remains intact, and the distinctive “ninja-style” of these courses will be a major challenge for athletes in 2028.
