The visa scandal at the 2026 World Cup: Thomas Parte will not play against Panama due to Canada’s refusal to grant him a visa

The International Football Federation officially announced that Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Parte will not be able to participate in the team’s opening match against Panama, scheduled for June 17. The reason for this is Canada’s refusal to grant Parte a visa.

In its press release, FIFA clearly defined the responsibilities involved: “FIFA does not get involved in immigration procedures in host countries, including the processing of visa applications. As was the case at previous tournaments organized by FIFA, the final decision regarding a player’s entry into the country remains with the government of the host country.”

Parte was supposed to fly directly from the Black Stars’ training camp in Boston, USA, to Canada. His absence will be a significant loss for the Ghanaian team. Parte is a key player in the midfield, with both defensive skills and ability to distribute the ball effectively. The coaching staff will need to quickly adjust their tactics before the team’s debut at the tournament.

This situation raises questions about logistics during major international tournaments. Despite being participants in the World Cup, athletes and staff are subject to the immigration laws of the host country. FIFA traditionally only provides recommendation letters and accreditation, but it does not have the authority to cancel visa requirements.

For now, Canadian authorities have not commented on the reasons for this refusal. The Ghanaian team is working to find a replacement for Parte. All further requests regarding the entry of FIFA teams will be directed solely to the Canadian authorities.
