A record was set, but the team still failed to qualify: the “football paradox” of Lechia in Poland
In the Polish Ekstraklasa, a rare sporting spectacle unfolded. Gdansk’s Lechia became the most attacking team of the season, scoring 62 goals in 32 matches. This same performance was achieved only by the current national champion, Lechia. It seemed that such strength would guarantee Lechia’s place in the top division. However, reality turned out to be much more difficult.
The team ended up in 16th place and was relegated to the first division. There were no administrative penalties or points deductions. Everything was decided on the pitch. Lechia conceded 65 goals, setting an anti-record for defensive solidity in the league. It’s a classic case of imbalance: you can score as many goals as you want, but if the defense is weak, then tournament points won’t help at all.
This case clearly shows that in modern football, balance between various aspects is more important than individual records. Otherwise, statistics become just beautiful, but useless numbers.
