The best offense, the worst defense: a paradox in Lechia’s exit from the Ekstraklasa.
The concluded season in the Polish Ekstraklasa presented the football world with a true statistical anomaly. Gdansk’s Lechia demonstrated remarkable scoring ability, scoring 62 goals and sharing the top spot in terms of attacks with the new champion, Lech Poznan. However, the team’s defense became its Achilles’ heel: they allowed 65 goals, which was the worst record in the league. In the end, Lechia became a unique case in the history of the tournament: a team with the best offense ended up in the first division.
The Poles humorously redefined the classic Brazilian football wisdom. In their interpretation, the motto sounds quite honest: “You can score as many goals as you want, and we’ll respond in kind.” This season clearly showed that in modern football, the balance between different phases of play is more important than individual statistical records.
